A RE-VISIT TO DUMAS STATION WINERY

Dumas Station, Dayton, Washington
A recent visit to Dayton, Washington meant only one thing…….I was heading to Dumas Station Winery to taste the launch of their new white wine, Cow Catcher White and re-visit some of my all time favorites.

For those who have not read some of our older blogs, Dumas Station is definitely a favorite.  They are located on Highway 12 just outside of Dayton in a historical 1908 apple packing shed that was built by James Dumas.

Jay, Doug, Debbie and Ali are the people behind this great winery and for the past six years have introduced me to their amazing wines.  They have crafted a lot of heart and soul into each vintage and not one season has disappointed me.

I’m not going to get all descriptive and detailed on each wine.  You can go to www.dumasstation.com if you want the specifications on each wine.  Here is my personal view about Dumas Station.

Cab Franc pairs well with chocolate!
Everyone knows I’m not a huge fan of Merlot but after trying the Dumas Merlot I was hooked.  No other Merlot compares in my book.  The 2012 vintage is rich, luscious and complex.  I have never experience a harsh tannin finish from any of their vintages and this one was no different.  Once you have this Merlot you will be hard pressed to drink any other Merlot.

The 2012 Syrah is fantastic!  I love the peppery notes and it goes so well with dark chocolate and any other great food.  This 100% Syrah is smooth on the finish and I think that is what surprises me most.

Cow Catcher Red has been one of my favorite blends since first discovering Dumas Station but I was really excited when I heard they were launching Cow Catcher White.  It does not disappoint.  Crisp but not sweet.  This is meant for those summer evenings when you’re sitting on the deck.

Good Friends at Dumas Station Winery
My two favorite wines at Dumas Station are the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc.  If for no other reason you visit Dumas Station, visit for these two wines.  To me they are the best of the best from Washington.   Jay’s unbelievable talents as a wine maker really come through in the balance and complexity.  I promise you will not be disappointed.

It was great to re-visit Dumas Station, drink my favorite wines and visit with old friends.  I’m looking forward to my next visit, when the exterior front of the winery will be completed.  More pictures will be posted for sure…..Cheers!! LD

Cheers, Chin-Chin, Salute! The sound made by the twisting of a cork, followed by a loud pop and the crackling of effervesce means there is a celebration to come, christening an important moment and memory’s to be made.   Significant occasions warrant a significant bubbly selection, here are a few notes to help you make your selection: Spumante is Italian sparkling wine, means “foamy” which can refer to all sparkling Italian wines, tends to be sweet. Presseco is an Italian sparkling dry white wine made from Grera grape primary grown in the Presseco region of Italy. Brut is a term used sometimes for the driest sparkling wines which means it has less sugar than those labeled extra dry. Champagne is a wine producing region in the far north of France near Paris.   Though used as a term to describe sparkling wine, true Champagne is aged longer than sparkling wine so can be dryer in taste.   Merlot - Cabernet Sauvignon - Chenin Blanc I’ve recently enjoyed three wines that reminded me of warm spring days on the back deck with good friends, sipping good wine. Olalla Winery produced a 2014 Merlot (Kilted Scotsman – Conner Lee Merlot) – this deep rich inky wine is not like any merlot you have ever experienced.     Each sip is lush, full of flavor and complexity.   I was recently introduced to Caymus Vineyards out of Napa Valley.   Their 2014 and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is so amazing.   Words fail to describe this deep dark wine.   It is so full of fruit and very smooth on the finish. Because of Denise’s recent research into Biodynamic wines, I tried an organic 100% French Chenin Blanc varietal from the Anjou, Loire Valley region .   It is full of fruit flavor but low in sugar.   I was able to enjoy several glasses with no side effects. There are so many wonderful wines out there today and I look forward to tasting and sharing them with all of you. Cheers, LaDo
